Considerations in the Neuroscience of Adolescent Brain Development: What Clinicians Can Use| Stephy Publishers

Image
Journal of Psychological Science and Research - (JPSSR)  |  Stephy Publishers Abstract  Neuroscience findings suggest brain immaturity and the proliferation of neurons in the frontal cortex at puberty may be significant factors affecting adolescent behaviors. The author considers these findings essential to bolster the analyst’s position to not act, in light of the impulses treating such cases can arouse. Clinical examples illustrate.  Keywords: Neuroscience of adolescence, Brain development, Separation, Clinicians, Adolescent therapy Introduction Adolescence is a developmental period of turbulence. As teenagers are unconsciously attempting to separate from their families they frequently engage in oppositional and even bizarre behaviors. Throughout my years of clini...

Journal of Psychological Science and Research  - (JPsSR) |  Stephy Publishers Primary Mental Health Care Part 2: Three European Primary Mental Health Care Examples as Basis for Change to the Irish System  Abstract The successes and limitations of primary mental health care systems in three countries outside of Ireland are examined in order to inform potential change for the Irish primary mental health care system. Systems currently at work within Scotland, England, and the Netherlands are outlined, all of which employ versions of the “stepped-care” approach to primary care. It is acknowledged that Ireland is attempting to modify primary care to include the stepped-care approach. However, there are significant limitations to the current Irish system. With the Scottish, English, and Dutch systems in mind, an alternative vision of primary mental health care for Ireland is suggested. Image
Journal of Psychological Science and Research  - (JPsSR) |  Stephy Publishers Abstract Primary mental health care is an evolving system, in need of regular revision and requiring innovative and creative adjustments in order to provide the public with an easily accessible and appropriate level and type of service, based on best practice and evidence. This paper is the first in a series of three exploring primary mental health care. The Irish model of care, ‘Counselling in Primary Care’, is presented as well as a number of short-comings associated with that model. The short-comings include eligibility criteria governing access, limitations of service as well as waiting lists; and the medicalization of service delivery. Keywords: Mental health, Counselling, Primary care Introduction Acknowledging the need to update Irish mental health policy and service delivery in 2003, the Department of Health and Children (DoHC) commissioned a national policy framework to guide th...

The Impact of the 1970s on Black Identity Development: An Analysis of Psychosocial and Black Existential Perspectives| Stephy Publishers

Image
Journal of Psychological Science and Research  - (JPsSR) |  Stephy Publishers Abstract With the killing of George Floyd in 2020 and the subsequent focus on black existence, itis perhaps timely to revisit a previous historical period – the 1970s which saw theemergence of the civil rights movement and the transformation of black consciousness and identity. Both psychosocial and existential theories highlight the relationship between context and the development of identity. Drawing on the work of Erikson, Cross describes stages of identity development from negro to black which he originally related to the historical context of the black consciousness period of the 1970s but later, developed into a tool to measure black identity. This model depicts identity as developing in fixed stages with objective and measurable characteristics. The black existential approach focuses on the construction of identity within a context shaped by an individual’s experiences. Black existential...

Access and Waiting Time Standard for Early Intervention in Psychosis: At Risk Mental State Identification and Interventions Accepted within a Routine Service| Stephy Publishers

Image
Journal of Psychological Science and Research  | Stephy Publishers Abstract Aim: Following the introduction of an access and waiting time standard for Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) services, the identification and treatment of people experiencing an At-Risk Mental State (ARMS) for psychosis has become a national priority. However, there is a dearth of literature concerning what is offered to and accepted by ARMS service users within routine services. Methods: This descriptive evaluation reports upon the assessment and treatment of people with an at-risk mental state identified during the first year of a routine service operating in line with the EIP standard. The paper details referral sources, referral to treatment times, socio-demographic characteristics, ARMS subgroups and the interventions accepted by these service users. Results: A total of 138 ARMS cases were identified over the evaluation period, with 73% (n=101) aged between 18-34 years and 86% (n=118) m...
