Acute Kidney Injury in Children| Stephy Publishers

Image
SOJ Pediatrics and Clinical Neonatology - (SOJPCN)| Stephy Publishers Abstract Recent literature data has shown that acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common occurrence in critically ill children and that it is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality, even after adjusting for other risk factors. In addition, it can result in long-term sequelae translated by the development of arterial hypertension, microalbuminuria and chronic renal dysfunction. High degree of suspicion, early diagnosis based on the recognition of patients at risk and the use of new criteria for the diagnosis and classification of AKI and, whenever possible, using the new biomarkers can positively alter the prognosis of these patients. Although there is still no specific treatment for AKI, it is recommended to focus on the immediate institution of preventive measures in order to maintain renal hemodynamics, early treatment of septic patients, elimination of exogenous nephrotoxins, recognition and man...

Evaluation of Serum Tumor Markers Variation, following the Radioactive Iodine Therapy in Patients with Differentiated Thyroid Cancer| Stephy Publishers

Stephy Publishers:    SOJ Pediatrics and Clinical Neonatology (SOJPCN) Abstract Introduction:  Radioactive iodine is the effective therapy in thyroid cancer. The aim of this study is to evaluate the serum tumor markers in patients under the therapy with radioactive iodine 131. Material and methods:  45 cases of female patients aged 16-60 years with thyroid cancer surgery referred to the nuclear medicine department of Nemazi hospital for (iodine treatment after surgery) were selected. The selection was on the basis of interviewing and information of patients is consent forms. Only patients with thyroid cancer and referred for the first time without any other diseases were chosen for this study. The selected patients were prescribed a dose of 150mCi of I-131.From each patient, 4 mL of chelated serum for serological studies on tumor markers and 2 mL of oxalated serum for spectrophotometry studies on cell death were used in three stages. The first stage before the...

Major Abdominal Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery in Children aged between 10 and 18 Years and Postoperative Outcome| Stephy Publishers

Image
Stephy Publishers:    SOJ Pediatrics and Clinical Neonatology (SOJPCN) Abstract Background: In a previously conducted monocentric retrospective study, predictors of postoperative outcome in children included American Society of Anesthesiologists score, transfusion, emergency interventions, surgery and age. A study has been undertaken to describe postoperative outcome in patients aged between 10 and 18 years included in the initial study in abdominal surgery, neurosurgery and orthopedics. Aims: To describe postoperative outcome in children aged between 10 and 18 years. Methods: Secondary analysis of postoperative outcome in children aged between 10 and 18 years included retrospectively in the initial study of 594 patients. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee. Results: There were 221 children with a mean age of 165.5±24.3 months in abdominal surgery, neurosurgery and orthopedics. 16.3% patients had intra-operative or postoperative complications. Intra-operativ...

Effect of Zinc Gluconate Supplementation on Weight Gain in Preterm Infants with Very Low Birth Weight| Stephy Publishers

Image
Stephy Publishers:    SOJ Pediatrics and Clinical Neonatology (SOJPCN) Abstract Objective: To know the effect of zinc supplementation on weight gain on premature newborns with very low birth weight. Material and Methods: Randomized, blinded clinical trial, assigned to two groups: with zinc supplementation and placebo. Both with milk intake higher than 100ml/kg/day. We evaluated the absolute and relative growth speed, comorbidities, hospital stay and adverse reactions. We used Student´s t-distribution for the comparison of continuous variables, Mann-Whitney U test for nonparametric variables, X2 for categorical variables, and simple regression analysis for absolute and relative growth rate. P<0.05 was considered significant. Results: We studied 56 patients, 28 in each group. The growth speed was higher in the supplemented group from the second week of treatment. The absolute and relative growth rate was 20.23±2.8g/day and 19.63±5.1g/kg/day in the zinc group and 17.13±...

Cancer Immunotherapy: Managing Amino Acids during Forced Aetopy| Stephy Publishers

Image
SOJ Pediatrics and Clinical Neonatology - (SOJPCN)| Stephy Publishers Abstract Cancer patients of all ages experience great satisfaction with initial positive results from first-line therapy. Adjuvant therapy helps decrease the risk of cancer recurring or metastasizing. This review discusses forced atopy as cancer immunotherapy and explores managing select amino acids to starve metastatic cells during forced atopy (many allergies). Introduction A common goal in oncology is a treatment protocol that minimizes risk and maximizes success. The overall survival rate of children with solid tumor metastasis (Stage IV) has shown little improvement in that the extent of the relocation of metastatic cells, and their progression, is not well understood. To better understand the limits of metastasis, an alternative treatment strategy is proposed; based on maladaptive immunity. A skin cream having natural and recombinant allergens, and associated with immunologic adjuvants, is vectored...

Sonographic Diagnosis of Preduodenal Portal Vein in Children| Stephy Publishers

Image
SOJ Pediatrics and Clinical Neonatology - (SOJPCN)| Stephy Publishers Abstract Purpose:  To clarify the role of sonography in diagnosis of Preduodenal Portal Vein (PDPV) in children. Material and methods:  We present two cases with PDPV in children proved with surgery. The first case was diagnosed retrospectively, the second one prospectively. Results: In both cases the PDPV appears above the duodenum with convexity which is opposite of normal concave configuration of PV. Both cases appear with multiple congenital association anomalies. Conclusion:  The sonography is safe, convenient, fast, time- effective and cost- effective method for precise diagnosis of PDPV in children. Keywords Portal vein, Preduodenal portal vein, Annular pancreas, Duodenal web Abbreviations PV: portal vein; PDPV: preduodenal portal vein; AP: annular pancreas; DW: duodenal web Introduction Preduodenal portal vein (PDPV) is a rare anomaly in which the portal vein passes a...

Maternal and Neonatal Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura| Stephy Publishers

Image
SOJ Pediatrics and Clinical Neonatology - (SOJPCN)| Stephy Publishers Introduction Immune thrombocytopenic (ITP) is an autoimmune disease that affects 9.5/100,000 adults in the population. 1  It is characterized by autoimmune destruction of platelets leading to potentially life-threatening thrombocytopenia. About 7% of pregnant mothers are affected by thrombocytopenia with 1 to 10 per 10,000 mothers being affected with ITP. Studies have shown that ITP is generally a benign condition in the birthing mother and rarely has a long-lasting effect on the newborn child. 2  In the rare event that the newborn is severely affected, treatment is required. We present a case of ITP in both a mother and her newborn. Case Report The infant is a 40 weeks and 1 days gestational female who was born via spontaneous vaginal delivery to a 35 year old now gravida 3, para 3 Hispanic mother with a history of ITP of pregnancy. Mother was group B streptococcus positive but otherwise negat...
